Canakkale Province

Turkey, Canakkale, Canakkale

Description

The Canakkale Province stretches northwest of Asia Minor, covering also territories of the European part of Turkey, embracing somehow two peninsulas, the one of Troy (in Asia Minor) and the other of Gallipoli (in the European side). Between the two peninsulas are the straits of the Dardanelles (the Hellespont, as called in the ancient years), while the islands of Imvros and Tenedos are also part of this Province. In this destination, myth merges with history ... The Troy of Homer and the heroes of the Iliad, Frixos and Elli with the Golden, crossing the straits of the Dardanelles on their return from Colchis, meet with the tombs of ancient Thracians Kings and (much later) with the Allies of World War I who landed in the Gallipoli peninsula. Therefore, there are numerous and multifarious attractions that the visitors may see when visiting the province of Canakkale: The archaeological site of legendary Troy, the opposite fortresses built by Muhammad the Conqueror ( Kilitbahir Kalesi / Kilid al-bahr on the European side and Cimenlik Kalesi / Kale-i Sultaniye on the Asian side). The Archaelogical site of Çanakkale and the Maritime Museum, as well as the famous stone Clock Tower built in 1897 by Italian Consul Vitalis which stands close to the ferry of the line Canakkale-Eceabat.
