Description
On the edge of the Sant Salvador beach, in the El Vendrell municipality, we find the Calafell beach. It is a large and calm beach, very popular among families with children , which is popularly known as the ´feeding bottle beach´. The Calafell waters have always been known for its medicinal properties, as they have an iodine concentration five times higher than that of the sea. In fact, between 1926 and 1928 the Sant Joan de Déu maritime sanitarium operated in the area, now converted into a luxury hotel and spa center, where many people came suffering from tuberculosis. Although in the early nineties sand of inferior quality was introduced in order to replace the stretches of beach that had disappeared due to erosion, the efforts that have subsequently been made returned much of its original quality. Like the rest of the town´s beaches, the Calafell beach provides many services which ensures a comfortable stay. There are lifeguard and first aid posts, showers, toilets, nets for beach volleyball and companies that rent pedalos and kayaks. One of its most interesting tourist attractions is the Calafell lifeboat , which can be seen on the promenade. It is an unsinkable boat that is capable of rotating on its axis without sinking and always returning to its original position. For over twenty years it has been one of the best attractions during the summer. The vehicles can be parked on the town streets or starting from the river that defines the pedestrian mall to the east, where a promenade starts.
