Description
Cala des Degollador or sa Platja Gran belongs to the urban coast of Ciutadella, at a 10 minutes walk from the square del Ajuntament, located between Port de Ciutadella (the second most important port in Menorca, after the infrastructure of Port de Maó) and Punta des Gegant, as well as surrounded by Castell de Sant Nicolau and the village of Son Oleo, and the town of Ciutadella, some metres south, as background. This sea inlet is characterized by its length (half a kilometre toward the interior), and by being very narrow, as well as by being quite small. The beach is sandy, it has a sea promenade, it is exposed to the winds from the southwest-west, a gentle breeze, calm water, a gentle slope and it is not too crowded by local visitors and tourists (families). The marine and underwater conditions for anchoring boats are good. The entrance of this sea inlet is between 50 and 80 metres large and it has a sandy ground, located at about seven metres of depth, which gets lower until the coast. In the central area there is the small island of Illot de sa Galera (30 metres long and 10 metres large). On the right side there is a small inlet, with some sandy metres, known as sa Platja Petita. The accessibility by car is easy following the signs. The private car can be left on a free parking area in the surroundings. You can also reach this beach from the plaza Europa of Ciutadella, which is a wonderful walk though the streets. For health and safety reasons, the municipal ordinances ban pets on beaches.
