Fiskardo

Greece, Ionian Islands, Kefalonia, Fiskardo

Description

Fiskardo is a village in the north of Kefalonia, the nearest point Kefalonia-Ithaca. It took its name from the Norman conqueror Robert Guiscard, who in 1085 besieged the area. The village is one of the few on the island that retains its old architectural character, as there was seriously damaged by the earthquake of Kefalonia in 1953. Fiskardo is also birthplace of poet Nikos Kavvadia. It was the only area of Kefalonia not been hit by the devastating earthquake of 1953.
