El Muntanyans Beach
Spain, Cataluña, Tarragona
Coastline panorama
Description
Included in the Pla d´Espais d´Interès Natural, Els Muntanyans is a large beach with an almost unique ecosystem of great ecological and scenic value. It includes a coastal strip formed with semi mobile dunes and salt water lagoons. The beach is four kilometres long and one hundred metres wide, and is formed by fine golden sand that borders warm calm waters. It has a medium degree of occupation and offers basic services such as showers, portable toilets or sunshade rental. Its privileged natural surroundings make it ideal for nudists, which consider this beach as one of their favourite. Els Muntanyan is a small oasis where a few indigenous plant species are preserved, such as the sea lily, endangered, or the beachgrass, and fauna such as the red-tailed lizard. If we go inland, just before we get to the railway line, there are salt ponds and salt water marshes, lagoon areas in which we also find indigenous plant species such as the salicornia or birds such as the black-legged plover. Further up the coast, a little over one kilometre away, in the municipality of Tarragona, we can visit the emblematic Berà arch, a triumphal arch of the Roman period built on the course of the old via Augusta.
