Palermo is a city in Insular Italy, the capital of both the autonomous region of Sicily and the Province of Palermo. The city is noted for its history, culture, architecture and gastronomy, playing an important role throughout much of its existence it is over 2,700 years old. Being Sicily`s administrative capital, Palermo is home to much of the region`s main economic, financial, touristic and commercial life. The local university is the University of Palermo, the island`s second oldest university. It was officially founded in 1806, although historical records indicate that medicine and law have been taught there since the late 15th century.
